While today's hosts tend to be pretty lenient with evening dresses for women their guests' party attire, you may still come across traditional dress code clauses on your wedding invitations, leaving you confused about what you should be wearing (what is a "morning dress," exactly? ?). white tie

White tie is the most formal dress code in Western fashion. Men should wear black tuxedo, trousers, shoes and socks; white wing collar shirt, vest and bow tie; studs, cufflinks, suspenders and, if you really want to go wild, a boutonniere. There is no color requirement for women, any old floor-length evening or ball gown will do - long gloves are optional. For events before 6pm, the morning gown is a white tie variation; gentlemen wear a modified tuxedo known as a dressing gown and striped trousers in pastel colours, while women can try a shorter skirt . black tie

A black tie is slightly less rigid, but very stylish. For men, black tie requires a tuxedo jacket (not a tuxedo), a black bow tie (not a white tie), and a black vest or belt. Ladies may opt for a dressy cocktail dress over a long gown. The evening dress style with black tie is called a pram, with a casual coat instead of a men's evening dress and a tie instead of a bow tie. If the invitation mentions a creative black tie, don't let your mind wander; men can choose an unconventional color for their shirts or accessories.
semi formal

At the low end of the fancy scale are semi-formal gowns (considered informal in traditional parlance). Men only need to wear a suit, dress shirt and tie; women can wear a short afternoon or cocktail dress or a formal separate.

Regardless of the occasion or time of day, it is best to respect the dress code of the host sending the invitation. You don't want to be wearing a purple sash to a formal dinner when everyone else is wearing hats and tails.
